Over the last week, we have seen a mixed bag of electronics industry news. We bring you up to speed on Q1 EDA industry revenue, the United Kingdom's plan to ban HUAWEI from its 5G networks, merger and acquisition news, and the sad loss of a well-known engineer. 

EDA Industry Revenue Up

The Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance Market Statistics Service (MSS) announced this week that the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 3.5% in Q1 2020. EDA industry revenue reached $2.69 billion, the group reported. PCB and MCM revenue increased 12%, while Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) increased 12.5%.

HUAWEI Banned from 5G Networks

The United Kingdom recently announced it is banning HUAWEI from its 5G networks. "By the time of the next election we will have implemented in law an irreversible path for the complete removal of Huawei equipment from our 5G networks," UK Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said in a release.

Analog Devices to Buy Maxim Integrated Products

Analog Devices has entered an agreement to purchase Maxim Integrated Products. The transaction "will strengthen ADI as an analog semiconductor leader with increased breadth and scale across multiple attractive end markets,” Analog said in a release. The companies claim the move will offer Analog additional strength in data center and automotive markets. Analog purchased Linear Technology in 2016. 

Changes Coming for Arm?

Arm announced last week that it is proposing to transfer "two IoT Services Group (ISG) businesses, IoT Platform and Treasure Data, to new entities that would be owned and operated by SoftBank Group Corp. and its affiliates." The company says the move will enable it to focus on its semiconductor IP business. This week, the Wall Street Journal reports that SoftBank, which purchased Arm for $32 billion in 2016, is considering a sale or initial public offering for Arm.

RIP Grant Imahara

Engineer, roboticist, and TV personality Grant Imahara passed away this week at the age of 49 following a brain aneurysm. In addition to his roles on Discovery's MythBusters and Netflix's White Rabbit Project, he hosted a variety of content for Mouser Electronics. "In his own, unique way, Grant showed how robotics and engineering can be fun," Mouser Electronics posted on its website.
