In Paris the Global Climate March was cancelled due to security concerns after the November 13 attacks. To express their call for climate justice, citizens placed pairs of shoes at the Place de la Republique. Emma Ruby-Sachs, Executive Director of the online campaigning organisation Avaaz, explains the symbolic action.
Both UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Pope Francis placed a pair of their shoes in solidarity.

But on Sunday afternoon streets around Place de la Republique became the scene of clashes between the police and protesters who insisted on marching despite the ban.
