Intel has unveiled a C++ compiler V13.0 for the Android OS. The compiler is designed for the development of apps using the Android Native Development Kit (NDK). The current edition uses version 4.6 of the open source Gnu Compiler Collection (GCC) toolchain.

The compiler produces code which runs exclusively on Intel devices (including its Atom family intended for mobile applications) under versions 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or 4.1 (Jelly Bean) of Android. In its current form the compiler is certified for use on machines running the Ubuntu 10.04 or 11.04 operating system. Windows and Apple OSX systems are not supported. The company anticipates that its code optimizer will show real improvements in efficiency for Apps demanding higher performance.

Intel has announced that the compiler will be available in the short term for free download, subject to registration on the company’s web site.

Earlier this month Intel announced the release of two affordable ‘Intel Education Tablet’ slates featuring Atom processors. These 7” and 10” tablets run Android 4.1 and 4.0 respectively and are targeted at education and student use. Both machines come loaded with an Intel Education software package.
