Light sensor matches human visual response
The Optoelectronics group of Vishay Intertechnology has developed a new precision digital ambient light sensor for consumer and industrial applications that has the same spectral sensitivity as the human eye. The VEML6030 integrates a very sensitive photodiode, a low-noise amplifier and a 16-bit ADC in a transparent SMD package measuring just 2x2 mm.

The VEML6030 enables quick and accurate measurement of ambient light levels. The sensor features an I²C bus interface for easy circuit integration, as well as a programmable interrupt pin. It can be to dim display or keypad lighting or for optical on/off control of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, television sets, digital cameras, and industrial or medical applications.
Filtron technology provides spectral sensitivity close to the human visual response, and O-Trim technology ensures a tolerance range of less than 10%. The sensor covers the light intensity range from 0 lx to 167 klx. It has integrated 100 Hz and 120 Hz flicker suppression and wide-range temperature compensation.
