Magnetic switch has lateral sensitivity
A new magnetic sensing device delivers switch and latch functions, but unlike existing products it can determine the presence of magnetic fields that are lateral to it, not just orthogonal. To make the sensor even more unique, it is currently the only one to support Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) B.
Besides having lateral sensitivity and ASIL B certification, the MLX92292 from Melexis is also a very low-power device. Housed in 3-lead TSOT or TO92 package formats, with an operating voltage range from 3.3 V to 18 V, the sensor's power consumption of about 7 µA makes it highly suitable for battery-powered operation. This will prove advantageous in circumstances where the vehicle’s engine may not be turned on, as it places no significant drain on the battery resource.
The lateral sensitivity of the new device allows for a simplification of designs based on traditional orthogonal sensitive sensors that require more complicated 3D configurations to achieve the same result.
Target applications of the MLX92292 include brake lights, steering sensors, handbrake mechanisms, and other typical automotive applications.
