Today in the UK we are celebrating ‘National Women in Engineering Day’ but the shocking truth is; only 6% of UK engineers are Women! According to predictions the UK will need 1.82 million skilled engineers by 2022. The reason for the gender disparity is baffling; engineering is truly a growing, multi-faceted discipline. For any country to be competitive it can’t afford to squander the talent of its youth.

Among the initiatives launched to encourage greater uptake, the Curiosity Hub will be holding a free event ‘Girls Imagineer the future’ this Sat 27 June at the University of Brighton (Watts Building), Brighton. The Curiosity Hub organization was founded in 2014 by Jacqueline Currie, a former aerospace engineer who draws on diverse experiences in both engineering R&D and 5 years in informal education practice which helped her develop engaging and hands-on activities for young minds. It is a not-for-profit STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) education organisation based in Brighton, UK. Their mission is to bring a creative and interdisciplinary approach to STEAM education, via workshops and outreach events for all ages.

Events on Saturday will include hands-on activities with LEGO mindstorms, digital music production using Sonic Pi and stop-motion animation film production. For more information visit the Curiosity Hub.
