Radio Module Reads Thousands of Smart Meters Wirelessly
Smart metering applications using wireless communication result in huge networks with many nodes. The RC1700HP-MBUS4 module from Radiocrafts provides all features necessary for secure two-way communication between the meters and a data concentrator. The module integrates a wireless M-Bus stack supporting all physical layers, MAC layers and frame formats, as well as transport and security layers. All critical timing for two-way communication is handled by the module, which also features very low power consumption for extended battery life.
The module is fully compliant with the new wireless meter readout standard prEN 13757-4:2011 and operates in the new harmonized frequency band for meter reading in Europe. The combination of VHF wireless frequency, true narrowband communication and high output power yields superior communication range and coverage even in urban environments, according to the manufacturer. The typical range is 1.5 km in urban areas and 20–40 km in open terrain with a quarter-wave antenna.
Support can be expanded to several thousand wireless meters by using an external host controller to provide expanded key memory. The module detects and checks ELL and APL encryption automatically. An automatic message generator reduces overhead for two-way communication with meters, allowing a single concentrator to handle thousands of meters.
