Retronics : A New book on Old electronics
If you love boatanchors, 807s, e-debris, 2N3055s, old technology, Hewlett Packard, Tektronix, esoteric components from the distant past, or even the thrill of retracing your own footsteps and education in electronics, then Elektor’s latest “Retronics” book by editor Jan Buiting should be on your bookshelf.
The book covers vintage test and measurement equipment, weird components, old technologies, computer history, radios, amplifiers and legendary Elektor designs like the Formant, Crescendo and Filmnet decoder. It’s a wonderful collection of tales on electronics and technologies spanning 1920 through 1990 (roughly). The tales are fun to read, and are sure to trigger your recollection of that old scope, your first tube amplifier, or an Elektor blockbuster project from the 1970s or 1980s.
Every one of the sumptuously illustrated 80+ chapters in the book tells a personal story of the impact electronics can have on people, with a good deal of engineer’s humor thrown in. Besides Jan Buiting’s own pieces, the book has contributions from about 15 authors from all over the world on their favorite piece of retro electronics.
