Safer roads with the see-through truck
In a bid to combat road deaths Samsung in Argentina developed the idea for the “Safety Truck”. Basically, a wireless camera at the front of the truck connects to the video displays on the back. The camera simply transmits what is happening ahead of the truck, for those travelling behind. The benefits are obvious.

In addition to making overtaking safer, the Safety Truck should also eliminate accidents due to “unexpected” braking of the truck by another accident ahead. There’s even a night mode of operation.
The system has progressed from prototyping to an early testing phase. The next step, says Samsung, is to meet more national standards and protocols, to get international approval. One of the main hurdles to overcome is whether drivers should trust the image is in real time! Although oncoming traffic would confirm the timeliness of the images, any delay or error in the image processing could have fatal results.
