Electronic measurements stretching beyond pure measuring of voltage or current, in general require extra instruments beside the standard meters. Keithley | Tektronix have combined these instruments into a single package.

Whenever you want to record graphs or capture I, V and R, the must-have equipment is a DMM, often in combination with an adjustable voltage and current source, plus an electronic load. Exactly that is integrated in the Source Measure Unit from Keithley. Instead of connecting up and adjusting four separate instruments, you set up just one: SMU.
