Raspberry Pi has unveiled the Raspberry Pi 5 16 GB version. This new model sits at the top of the Pi 5 lineup, which also includes 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB variants. While it shares the same hardware and peripherals as its smaller siblings, the 16 GB model is aimed at users with demanding applications that require significant memory capacity.
Why 16 GB, and Why Now?
The leap to 16 GB addresses emerging use cases that benefit from more memory, such as running large language models, computational fluid dynamics, and other memory-intensive tasks. The improved BCM2712 application processor now supports larger memory configurations, making the 16 GB model possible. Dubbed "Raspberry Pi Carbon Removal Credits," this $4 add-on offsets the estimated 6.5kg CO₂ footprint associated with manufacturing, shipping, and disposing of a Raspberry Pi. The program uses enhanced rock weathering (ERW) technology to lock carbon dioxide into solid carbonate form over decades. This scalable, verifiable approach aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
