We know from surveys that most Elektor readers are also professional electronics engineers. They work in the development, purchasing, or sales of components and devices. We have therefore always been a magazine that has defied the usual division into hobby and professional electronics. A few years ago, we launched our Industry Special (first under the name “Elektor Business”).
In 2022, we are integrating interesting industry-related articles into Elektor magazine. With a stronger focus on one main topic — without sacrificing coverage of the entire spectrum of electronics in our issues — we can cover different areas more comprehensively and in-depth.

Elektor Edition March/April

In March/April, we focus on “Embedded Development.” Elektor's Content and Lab Team presents a variety of projects and background articles about small computing chips. On page 52, we cover two current trends in the embedded landscape, the secure programming language Rust and the management of firmware. Starting on page 6, Elektor Lab engineer Mathias Claussen explains how to “build” and operate a RISC-V processor. For beginners and makers, we offer a helpful overview of affordable Raspberry Pi RP2040-based boards (p. 28), as well as a concise overview of the Arduino's serial plotter (p. 15). We also include a variety of projects, including a buffer board for the Raspberry Pi (p. 24), a non-contact light switch (p. 42), and a wireless/serial interface (p. 91). We encourage you to develop with us!

Interested in embedded development? Want to write programs for embedded designs? In Elektor's upcoming live webinar, Elektor Lab engineer Mathias Claußen and Editor in Chief Jens Nickel introduce PlatformIO, a handy open-source, cross-platform IDE for designing and collaborating with countless other embedded developers. They share their experiences and take your questions.

Mathias Claußen started as a trained IT systems electronics technician and earned a BSc in Electrical and Information Engineering and an MSc in Microelectronic Systems. After this, he worked as a project engineer for embedded development and focused on ARM Cortex-M-based architectures and real-time operating systems. Mathias joined Elektor in 2018 as part of the Elektor Lab team focusing mainly on software.

Jens Nickel is Elektor’s Editor in Chief. In addition to programming, he enjoys electronic music and video production. You can read his recent Elektor articles at www.elektormagazine.com/nickel.
