When was the last time you used LoRaWAN? If you need a refresher, or a little help getting started for the first time, this week’s video is for you. In this hands-on Elektor webinar, our senior engineer Saad Imtiaz walks viewers through setting up a LoRaWAN gateway and integrating it with The Things Network (TTN) and Home Assistant, offering a practical guide to help you get started.

His demonstration includes an ESP32 C3 microcontroller and an SCD30 carbon dioxide sensor module from Grove, which also measures temperature and humidity. The sensor is connected to a LoRa module (E5 by Seed Studio) that sends the collected data via LoRaWAN to the gateway. This data is then transmitted to The Things Network (TTN) and visualized on platforms like DataCake and Home Assistant.

The video walks us through configuring the sensor node, collecting the sensor data, and sending it to the cloud for real-time monitoring. Viewers will learn how to configure a Dragino LPS 8N gateway, set it up for long-distance communication, and connect it to TTN. The video offers insights into the specific frequencies, server addresses, and configuration steps needed.

For those looking to visualize data, Saad demonstrates integrating the LoRaWAN gateway with platforms like DataCake and Home Assistant, allowing for real-time monitoring of sensor data. The session also touches on real-world applications, such as using solar-powered sensor nodes for remote environmental monitoring.

The video is an excellent resource for those interested in setting up a personal IoT network using LoRaWAN. If you’re curious about long-range IoT communication, watch the webinar below:
