The relay logic used to control industrial machinery was eventually replaced with discrete digital logic but it was still difficult to modify and maintain. A programmable solution was needed but late 1970’s computers were expensive and complex so Motorola introduced the MC14500 industrial control unit. It has an interesting 1-bit architecture that is worthy of being a Peculiar Part.
