Although roughly 25% of the popu-lation are susceptible to diabetes, only 3% actually contract this much feared illness; of these diabetics approximately 30% (i.e. roughly. 1 % of the total popu-lation) are dependent upon insulin (diabetes mellitus), whilst the remaining 70% can be treated by means of a care-fully regulated diet and, in some cases, by pills which reduce the level of sugar in the blood.
