Although extremely useful, the self-cancelling devices fitted to car direction indicators are not infallible. For example, they will not operate when only a small movement of the steering wheel is made, as when pulling out to overtake. An audible warning device to indicate that the flashers have not cancelled is preferable to the visual indication normally fitted, as it is more notice-able and does not require the driver to take his eyes off the road .
