In digital circuits where parallel information must be converted into serial data, a start-stop oscillator is often used. One system is to use the oscillator to clock a counter, the output of which is compared with the parallel data. Initially the counter is reset; the external oscillator is then started, clocking the counter; when the correct count is reached, the oscillator is stopped.
