Generally speaking, resistors with a 5% tolerance are more than adequate for most of the circuits published in Elektor. However from time to time there may be occasions when 1 % re-sistors are required, or when the value of two resistors must be matched to within 1%. This is the case with for example digital meters, where it is worth the extra expense of using very accurate attenuator resistors in order to fully exploit the accuracy offered by a digital display.
