The increasing attention being paid to digital methods of audio signal processing has led to a search fo r ways of using output transistors as switches. A recent example is the Class D or PWM (pulse width modulation) amplifier, in which the analogue input signal is con-verted into a digital pulse train, the duty-cycle of which varies in sympathy with the amplitude of the input signal.
