Each string is tuned to a. specific note which can be considered as the "basic note" for that particular string. When playing it, the fingers of one hand press one or more of the strings down onto the "frets" along the neck of the guitar. This reduces the effective length of the string, so that it produces a higher note when it is struck. Guitars are con- structed in such a way that each success- ive fret corresponds to a half-note increase. By depressing several strings at once it is possible to play complete chords.
