Gramophone records are still the recording medium that offers the highest quality, provided a good cartridge and preamp are used. Most of the really good cartridges are the moving coil type, and these require a step-up transformer or, as is more common nowadays, a so-called pre-preamp. The phono preamp and the moving coil pre-preamp described in this article are designed to form a single module.
