Sundials, water clocks, oil lamps, candles and hour glasses are just some of the things that have been used to measure time down through the ages. Then came the mechanical clock. Nobody knows for certain exactly when this first came into existence but they have been made at least since the fourteenth century. Since then, mechanical clocks have been consistently improved and refined. Watches have been made since about the end of the fifteenth century, but it took a long time before the "portable clock" was im- proved enough so that it worked reasonably accurately. The best clocks in the seven- teenth century had an error of about a minute per day. With an average watch an error of a quarter of an hour a week could be expected.
