RAIN GAUGE Rain is something farmers love (well, to an extent...) and holidaymakers hate It is, however, indispensable to life, and it is, therefore, often essential to know the exact amount of rainfall over a given period And that is where the present rain gauge comes in. Basically, a rain gauge is an instru- ment that collects rain in a suitable vessel and then in some way ex- presses the amount of water col- lected in inches or millimetres. In this context, it is useful to know that a steady drizzle lasting several hours is likely to cause a total fall of 20 to 25 mm/m2, while a heavy cloud burst can bring down some 50 to 60 mm/m2.
