The domestic mains voltage,
even at the best of
times, does not have a clean
wave form. For all sorts of reason,
there are almost always
spikes superimposed on the
voltage and these adversely
affect consumers' equipment.
These spikes normally last for
between 0.1 µs and 10 µs.
Their amplitude varies considerably,
but can be as high
as 1000 V.
