Connecting two computers that
contain a modern card is straightforward
as shown in the diagram. The
setup makes dialling a telephone
number superfluous: normally,
simple Hayes commands such as ATA
and ATO are sufficient to effect the
connection. Since the modem cards
are active, that is, they impose a
strong analogue signal on to the line,
it is not necessary for a direct voltage
to be put on to the line. All signals
needed for the communicatron are
generared by the modem cards.
