The infrared data link
discussed in this article
is based on the IrDA
(Infrared Data Association)
standard, and is
suitable for any modern
computer in combination
with any peripheral
device having an RS232
se rial interface. The
long-distance IrDA system
goes even further,
however. A full-duplex
mode operating at up to
19.2 kbit/s coupled with
RTS/CTS handshaking
enables links to be established
which used require
cables. In contrast with the
standard IrDA specification
(range up to 3 m), distances
of up to 20 m may
be covered.
