This design is based on the celebrated
555 timer IC, and
changes a positive voltage of 9 V
into a negative one. A low-power
dc-dc converter like the one
shown here may be required
sometimes when working with
battery-powered equipment or
older ICs that somehow call for
a low-current negative bias. The
circuit is also fine if you want to
use a single battery to power a circuit requiring a symmetrical
supply rails.
