The majority of Epson microcontrollers feature is a functional block called the RFC (Resistance-Frequency Converter) which is used as a cost-effective and power-efficient substitute for an A/D converter. As the name implies, the RFC measures resistance using a capacitor-resistor (CR) oscillation circuit whose frequency varies with the resistance. This article explores the deeper operation of a relatively unknown but interesting electronic device as far as sensor technology is concerned.
