As Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing are becoming more common across industry sectors, the topic of equipment obsolescence is gaining traction. Some industrial products that are less than five years old are no longer being produced by their original equipment manufacturer. To prepare for Industry 4.0, many companies believe they need to replace entire production systems to ensure compatibility with digital technologies. This begs the question: how do we deal with obsolescence in the world of Industry 4.0?
