Lithium-based chemistries have for some time been showing the most promise of all battery technologies. Although they offer an unsurpassed energy density they are difficult and expensive to manufacture and require careful handling and gentle charging. Things could be about to change with the introduction of nanotechnology into the manufacture of the cathode.
