Seven layers is all it takes

When computers communicate it’s important that messages are exchanged reliably, efficiently and securely (to protect against eavesdropping). To build such a complex communication protocol from scratch represents more than a weekend’s work for sure. As with any structured approach to such a problem it would be best to identify and divide the job into manageable tasks.
