The half-life of technical engineering information is generally considered to be 5 years. That is, after 5 years, half of what you learned is obsolete. Engineering, by far, is the fastest paced profession that there is. As Alice said, “You have to keep running as fast as you can, just to stay in the same place!” You can certainly take formal course-work to maintain your level of technical expertise. But often this is a difficult and expensive option. On the other hand, it’s really fairly easy, and usually fun, to teach yourself.
