The US maintains detailed weather and accident reports that provide a long-term record of the risk to human life posed by lightning. Since 1940, approximately 30% more people have been killed by lightning than by hurricanes (according to the US’s NOAA National Weather Service). Accurate weather forecasts nowadays help people to take precautions when there is a high risk of storms, and fatalities number fewer than 50 per year in the US on average. But every death is one too many, and in addition the injuries and equipment losses caused by lightning strikes.
