The American Standard Code for Information Interchange, first published in 1963 and from then on known as ASCII, was based on the English alphabet whose characters can be displayed nicely with as few as 5x7 pixels or even less. Today, electronic signs must show anything from Arabic to Zulu and more pixels per character are required.
