A word of warning
Companies planning to get into the Internet of Things (IoT) through consumer products or production-related technologies should not believe all the hype and over optimistic predictions. I have seen the number of connected devices specified at anywhere between 10 billion and 50 billion by 2020, meaning trillions of dollars in new revenue by 2025. However, having perused solid M2M and IoT market analyses carried out over a period of about 15 years, these numbers may be unrealistic and even potentially damaging to the industry when used to build business plans or acquire funding. Some argue that even if those numbers could be achieved in shipments, there is not nearly enough resource available to install and implement them. But then the industry should not be underestimated as far as its adaptively, capabilities and ingenuity go — especially in terms of embedded system power — and we might see a self-assembling, self-installing IoT device soon.
