Innovation Without Recourse to Moore’s Law
Intel has shot into the news once again, having informed investors during their July earnings call that their 7 nm manufacturing process is now 12 months behind its internal targets [1]. Many column inches in the consumer and financial press were generated as a result. This can easily leave you with the feeling that the seemingly never-ending march to make Moore’s Law a reality is the only way the semiconductor industry is innovating. However, nothing could be further from the truth. As we shall see, semiconductor innovation is wide-ranging and is not solely limited to the silicon.
