Lithium coin cells in the 2032 format and similar batteries are commonly used as “keep-alive” energy sources to maintain data and keep clocks running during equipment power-down. The standard charging circuit for these batteries is often pretty crude; in fact, it can push the battery way outside its recommended operating envelope. Overcharging leads to cell damage and an early death. A simple mod cures the problem.
