Since the introduction of European Union (EU) directive 2002/95/EG, lead-free soldering processes have become a commodity and are widely implemented in electronics assembly. For some dedicated high-reliability products — such as automotive, military, aerospace, and medical applications — lead containing alloy is still allowed, although the number of these exemptions will be reduced over time.
