I don’t know how many times I’ve read the prediction that the future will be paperless but there are many readers (also of Elektor) who still show a preference for the good old printed word. Compared with paper, eReaders and tablets tend to be heavy, bulky and break when you drop them but that could all be set to change.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas recently, LG Electronics were showcasing a flexible OLED display panel (see photo). The ‘30R’ is an 18 inch (46 cm) screen which gives it roughly the equivalent area of a double-page spread of a typical magazine. Technical details of the display are as yet, thin on the ground.
OLED technology is definitely the future for the South Korean manufacturer; they also had on show a 55 inch OLED TV described as ‘paper-thin’ and a similar sized, double-sided display which can show different images on the front and rear screen. All control electronics are contained beneath the viewing area. Check out the press release for more information.
