You’ve probably heard of BeagleBoard and their selection of single-board computers designed for developers and designers to build and prototype embedded systems. These are low-cost, open-source development platforms, offering a compact design, powerful ARM processors, and extensive I/O capabilities for a wide range of projects. In this week’s video, we cover one of the recent additions to their portfolio: the BeagleY-AI, presented by Andrei Aldea of Texas Instruments and Brian Tristam Williams of Elektor.

The video introduces this new development board equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The board features the AM67A applications processor, a powerful AI-focused chip that includes a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 for general computing and a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) delivering 4 TOPS (trillion operations per second) for AI tasks. With 4GB of DDR4 RAM and a versatile Raspberry Pi-like form factor, the BeagleY-AI is designed for seamless integration with existing accessories, allowing developers to start working quickly.

One of the standout features is the board’s ability to support three simultaneous display outputs (HDMI, LVDS, and DSI), all with touch capabilities, making it ideal for complex visual applications. Additionally, it includes a 50 GFLOPS GPU and three R5F cores for real-time control, which offer low-latency I/O handling without burdening the main computing cores.

The video also highlights the board's open-source nature, with Texas Instruments and the BeagleBoard Foundation providing full access to schematics and technical documentation. Long-term chip availability and minimal reliance on non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) further distinguish it from competitors.
