Recently, a press release from Arduino announced the Arduino IDE version 2.0 beta. As they issued an official press release for this, we decided to download it and give it a try. The download page states that it is almost complete but that there may be minor issues. We have been warned.
The Arduino IDE 2.0 download weighs some 200 MB and bloats to almost 650 MB after installation. The AVR toolchain is another 400 MB or so, so you will need at least 1 GB of disk space.
It looks quite like the Arduino Pro IDE in Normal mode that was launched almost a year ago. However, the button to switch between Pro and Normal mode is no longer available. The website on the other hand still mentions it on the Pro page.
Besides a Debug button the IDE is very similar to the current, old IDE but with better looks. The Boards and Library Managers now open on the side and there is a large number of parameters for the user to customise.
