Review: iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit
I found the iFixit toolset comprehensive and surprisingly good for repair work on electronic equipment that’s larger than your average cellphone or the kids’ latest e-gizmo, which it seems pitched at. The guys at iFixit were delighted to hear from me that their toolset also works on electronic equipment made before they were born. The packaging is superb, mancave-compatible and not prone to loss or mislaying of the tools and bits. The advantage of the all-plastic tools in the kit is that they are unlikely to damage the item on repair.
My only criticisms are that the tips of the bits are not hardened, that the price is steep, and that the kit it is lacking a small brush and a mirror. The kit makes a great gift though and is a good investment when you are serious about repairing devices with ever smaller screws inside and weirder methods required to open the case without breaking it with all the embarrassment that comes with it.
Oh yes and that Tek scope is working okay now; the smell is gone as are the occasional hiccups and breakdowns due to HV arcing and stray creep currents in dust settled on the board and even on components. Thijs and I have yet to tackle the other 2235, which is dead as a doornail but will also benefit from opening the way it should be done with the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit and locating the offending part(s). So far, I concur: “repair is noble”!
