The disadvantage of normal headphones is that they are connected to the main hifi equipment via a length of cable. This is unsightly, and people can trip over it. In recent years, a new solution to this old problem has been proposed: the infra-red transmission link. Although price, distortion and signal-to-noise ratio are all I O - 20 dB worse than the original cable (yes, the price too . .. ) there seems to be quite a demand for such a system. It is particularly popular as an `extra` in TV sets - the price difference isn`t so obvious there.
