There is a growing need for more cable capacity for telecommunications to satisfy the demand for more channels that are required for telephone,.for computer links and for new forms of communication (such as facsimile transmission) that are beginning to ap- pear. As there are various objections to laying more conventional cables to meet the growing need for increasing capacity, alternative methods of transmission have been sought.
