When enlarging photographs, two factors are of prime importance, the required exposure time, which is determined by the density of the negative, and the contrast of the negative. The latter determines which grade of paper should be used in order to obtain a print with good overall tonal contrast. The contrast of the negative is basically the difference between the lightest and darkest portions of the exposed film.
